My Work in Higher Education
With a decade of experience in Higher Education, here are some of the projects that I have worked on.
Achieving Effective Classroom Communication
Project: Tips and Strategies for achieving effective classroom communication for higher education instructors.
My involvement: This project was recently created as a passion project to help higher education instructors achieving effective classroom communication on two distinct levels. First, instructor to learner communication, where the instructor is given strategies to communicate with their learners more effectively and using language that their learners will understand. Second, to help learners communicate better with the instructor, and between themselves, especially in multimodal classroom experiences.
Learning Outcomes:
Explain the importance of effective communication in the classroom
Analyze poor communications styles
Apply hands-on strategies to foster effective communication
Overcome communication challenges through strategic application
Tools: Google Docs, Canva, and Higher Ed. research libraries.
Using A.I. as an Educator
Project: Canva and ChatGPT: Incorporating Digital Tools into your Curriculum for Higher Rates of Engagement, Retention and Student Success
My involvement: This project was created to be presented as a 90-minute workshop on a staff development day for instructors in higher education. My involvement included creating the entirety of the ChatGPT section; researching, random sample surveys, gathering information, creating examples, researching prompt engineering, developing prompt engineering samples and visuals, creating learning objectives, engaging activities, visual slides, and a presenters script. After the project was complete, I presented the ChatGPT portion which was a 45 minute presentation.
Learning Outcomes:
1: Analyze effectiveness of formative and summative assessments.
2: Using ChatGPT to create informative assessments, summative assessments, and rubrics.
3: Using A.I. powered rubrics for determining whether Learning Outcomes have been met and providing unbiased grading feedback.
Tools: Google Docs, ChatGPT, Canva, and Facebook groups for chatting with other SME's and for surveying other educators.
This project was created for The Higher Ed. Institute and cannot be shared in its entirety publicly. If you'd like to see it, please connect with me and I'd be happy to share the link to the project.
What did people say about this project:
"SUPER helpful presentation! Terrific ideas for how to help students learn to use AI appropriately - I've been trying to figure that out; the ideas were fabulous! Especially having students submit their ChatGPT conversation, and reflect on its use after an assignment."
"I love all of the helpful hints that were provided and the easy walkthrough of the topics."
"The discussion/examples on ChatGPT was helpful. Helped to show how the program can be useful in instruction/assignment development. Clarified some aspects/ideas."
"100% yes I would recommend this workshop to a colleague! As I shared at the end of the meeting, this was the most useful session I have attended in years, maybe ever. Thank you so much!"
Elevating Education with A.I. in canvas: Practical Strategies
Project: Canva and ChatGPT: Elevating Education with A.I. in canvas: Practical Strategies
My involvement: This project was created to be presented as a 60 minute workshop on a Student Learning Outcomes meeting with higher education folks all over the U.S. I was approached to create a workshop on helping higher education folks incorporate AI into their educational environment in a way where they could then implement or translate the information into Canvas LMS. This project was created entirely by me and I performed many of the following tasks; researching, random sample surveys, gathering information, creating examples, researching prompt engineering, developing prompt engineering samples and visuals, creating learning objectives, creating visual slides, and a presenters script. After the project was complete, I presented the ChatGPT portion which was a 45 minute presentation.
Learning Outcomes:
1: Understand the implications of using A.I. in Higher Education.
2: Create worksheets, discussions, assignments, and quizzes using prompt engineering.
3: Format your ChatGPT conversations and implement your work into Canvas LMS, including quizzes and discussions.
"An explanation of a complicated process for using assessment in Canvas, with an interesting session for using AI for lesson plans."
"It was extremely enlightening and informative."
"Incredibly informative, impactful, innovative and relevant to modern SLO assessment practice."
"Provided useful practical applications with excellent examples. The depth of the demonstrations and slide visuals allowed me to experience the discussed topics, not just listen to them. Excellent topics. Excellent presenter!"
Canvas Studio Project
Project: This video was created for the Career Planning Center at Cypress college to help learners create a personal account within the Eureka platform. I also facilitated this workshop in person, with supplemental material and worksheets that helped students learn more about their personality and strengths.
My involvement: I scripted, designed the slides, added voice, recorded, and video edited this introduction on my own based on the needs of the department and directions of the department coordinator.
Please note: I had access to limited video recording and editing resources for this project. This project was recorded and edited using Canvas Studio.
Tools: Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Canva, and Canvas Studio
